A triptych is a series of three images that are hung together to form a complete scene. The charming focal point of "North Mountain Academy" is a one-room school house that is typical of turn-of-the-century structures in rural Shenandoah Valley. One of the artist's signature black trees dominates the right side of the image. Rain barrels, which sit close by the front porch, collect drinking water for the students. The children participate in the schoolyard activities of the day. A young boy sits on the porch swing reading. Other children are playing and a young girl carries a basket of apples to share. The background reflects a bright, sun-warmed fall day. Autumn is in the air as the landscape features barren trees and the sky is awash with pale blue hues.
